Indicator 14.3.1

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Thailand has been increasingly engaged in regard to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a special SDG 14: Life below water. While the challenges of the regenerated seagrass area from the coastal areas of Trang province are being lost at a breathtaking speed, Asst. Prof. Porntep Wirachwong, as a head department of Marine Science and Environment, as well as lecturers and students from Marine Science Program, were involved in organizing campaigns under “The ecology and restoration of seagrass meadow project” together with recent teachers and about 120 individual students from Wichienmatu School, as a largest secondary school in Trang, Thailand. This project provided the progressive activity to support on SDG 14: Life below water with the topic highlight: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, which is clearly associated with the policy and plan of RUTS.

During the project, numerous activities were established at Makham Estuary area of Trang province, such as the definition and importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout the essential data in both the seagrass ecology and marine animals.

Additionally, the field activity of the planting methods and propagating seagrass in the area above was enjoying an extremely high level of oceanic education between the secondary school students and marine science students above.

Interestingly, this project has been developed to raise awareness of the need of seagrass conservation within the progressive SDG 14. We aim to have highlighted the dugong and seagrass conservation efforts in Thailand, which will be conserved and used responsibly in the world's oceans.
