Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) has implemented policies and procedures to reduce and manage wastewater from its buildings and canteens, in line with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s 2005 wastewater treatment regulations.

These wastewater treatment standards are set to protect public health and the environment as outlined below.

  • Building staff responsible for operating the wastewater treatment system must be properly trained and certified as per municipal regulations.
  • Grease traps in canteen wastewater systems must be inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional every six months.
  • Building staff must regularly inspect and maintain all wastewater treatment equipment and machinery, including aerators, treatment pond covers, and sewage pumps. Any malfunctioning items should be repaired or replaced immediately.
  • Canteen, shop, and beverage booth staff should work together on water conservation efforts to minimize wastewater production.

In addition, RUTS Trang campus, in collaboration with the King’s Royally Initiated Environmental Research and Development Project, operates a demonstration and training center for waste and wastewater treatment. The center emphasizes plant and grass filtration systems, which offer a low-cost, sustainable solution suitable for communities, businesses, and institutions of all sizes.

The center’s demonstration wastewater treatment system employs various plants and grasses, such as elephant grass (Typha angustifolia), umbrella plant (Cyperus involucratus), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), pandanus palm (Pandanus amaryllifolius), and vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides). These species effectively filter and absorb contaminants from the water, leading to a significant reduction in pollutants.

Additionally, the center provided training and demonstrations on wastewater treatment systems to 4,500 stakeholders in 2023, including youth, community members, hotels, schools, hospitals, and municipalities.
